Project description: TRACE aims to improve the health and well-being of European citizens by developing specific traceability systems that will trace the origin of food and animal feed products. This will enhance consumer confidence in the authenticity of food. Natural tracers such as trace elements, ratios of heavy (geo) and light (bio) isotopes and genetic markers will be measured to determine geographical, species and production origin. The project will focus on meat, cereals, honey, olive oil and mineral water. Particular attention will be paid to commodities labelled as "Designated Origin" and "Organic". TRACE will develop and draft standardized XML-schemes for coding and information exchange and establish "Good Traceability Practice".

Project description: The goal of the MolSpec-ID-project is the development of Molecular detection methods to identify specific plant and animal Species in foods, e.g. meat from goat/sheep, duck/turkey/chicken, pig/beef or ingredients from soybean or several nut-species. This is important to discover fraudulent replacement of food components and to avoid adverse reaction to unexpected food ingredients.

Project description: The goal of the GMOchips-project is the development of biochips to detect Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in food, e.g. different varieties of corn, soybean or sugar beat. Reliable detection methods are essential for the labelling of GMO concerned food and for the control at the EU borders.

Project description: Development of detection methods to identify foods produced by means of genetic engineering, e.g. tomatoes, soybean or corn, mostly through the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Development of a Database to collect Informations on these genetically modified foods which are commercialized, the modified DNA-sequences, suitable primers and probes for detection, detection methods, and literature about these foods.

Organisation: Research Project at the Institute of Scientific Computing in collaboration with the Institute of Food Science, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health and the Food Industry.
Project description: Development of an Integrated Food Composition Data Management System paying special attention to food available in Switzerland. (My part: Development and programming of the SchemaManager to extend the available set of properties used in food, component, data source and method description. 1999-2000).

Design For All
Acronym for: Development of Competence about Accessibility and Didactic Design
Duration: 2003-2005
Organisation: Research project of the University of Applied Sciences of Central Switzerland (FHZ) and the Lucerne University of Arts and Design (HGKL) 2003-2004. Similar project at the ETH Web Office, ETH Zurich, 1998-1999.
Project description: The goal of the project "Design For All" is to make aware of the design of and the need for accessible websites. A second step will be the development of a prototype that will help people with no disabilities to understand what a person with disabilities experiences once he tries to access inaccessible websites. Quality criteria, design theories of inclusive design and user-centered design processes will be applied escorting the design process of this prototype.
