TRACE Info:
Description: Established in 1872, the Walloon Agricultural Research Centre (CRA-W) is a leading scientific institution, depending on the Walloon Ministry of Agriculture in Belgium. CRA-W employs some 450 peoples including 120 scientists (PhD and Msc mostly holders of a degree in agronomy or chemistry). Its offices, laboratories, greenhouses, orchards and experimental plots cover about 300 ha. The available expertise is multidisciplinary and includes the following areas: plant breeding, genetic engineering, biomass valorisation, plant genetic resources management, horticulture, integrated plant protection, pest control, farming systems, husbandry, phytopharmacy, agricultural engineering, agro-meteorology, optimisation of agricultural productions, quality analysis of agro-food products. CRA-W has close relationships with the regional and federal authorities responsible for official controls of plant and animal products. In the frame of the quality assurance, CRA-W has been implementing since several years quality systems like " Good Laboratory Practices " (GLP), ISO 17025 and " Good Experimental Practices " (GEP).
[]
Expertise: The development of analytical methods and systems to check and trace the quality as well as the authenticity of agricultural products is a priority focus of research within of CRA-W. Over the last few years CRA-W has gained expertise through its participation in FP5 projects aimed at developing methods for detecting hazelnut oil in olive oil (MEDEO project , http://www.cica.es/aliens/igmedeo) or for detecting mammalian tissues in feedingstuffs (RTD STRATFEED project, http://www.stratfeed.cra.wallonie.be). Another example is the CRA-W"s involvement in the TYPIC project (http://www.typic.org), a study of differentiated quality food products (wine and dried ham) designed to identify consumer preferences and establish objective criteria for evaluation of such products. The project uses objective parameters defining typical characteristics of the products to analyse consumer behaviour and perception of differentiated quality products. A further aspect of the TYPIC project is the development of analytical methods to describe and guarantee the specific qualities of such products and their traceability. CRA-W is also involved in the GeoTraceAgri (http://www.geotraceagri.net) and the GTIS-CAP (http://gtis-cap.cra.wallonie.be ) projects. The most innovative technical results are the development of an integrated system for the management of the CAP and the development of geotraceability indicators which are useful diagnostic tools, providing actors in the sector with a guarantee of the origin and method of production of the food purchased. Furthermore CRA-W is also a partner of the FP6 project CO-EXTRA that is devoted to coexistence and traceabilty items linked to genetically modified organisms.
